The July 20th coup plotters wanted to make a separate peace with Britain, France and the US while continuing the war against the USSR. Some of them actually wanted to try to talk the UK, the US and France into joining them in some kind of anti-Bolshevik crusade.

They weren’t exactly the most realistic thinkers.

That’s because the plotters were largely from the old aristocracy, all tracing their lineages back generations, some to the court of Charlemagne himself. And while they thought little of a low-born peon like Hitler, they saw in him an opportunity to reclaim “glory” for Germany and so jumped aboard. It was only when the realized just how ruinous the war was becoming that they began plotting against him, the idea being that as much as the Western powers hated the Reich, they hated Bolshevism more and would agree to at least a ceasefire while the Soviets were kicked back across the Polish border.
