Though to be fair, the last two losing presidential candidates both served in Vietnam. So it may not be that much of a presidential resume booster, not as much as it should, anyway.

Key difference: neither of the two losing candidates that served in Vietnam protested in favor of the draft only to run and hide in a French castle. Both Kerry and McCain saw combat, and McCain had an extended stay in the Hanoi Hilton.
