I’m curious. Did he get back pay for all that time. What about his rank, he was a 2LT. when the war ended, but after 30 years of service he would have been a flag grade officer.

The Wiki page says:

The Japanese government offered him a large sum of money in back pay, which he refused. When money was pressed on him by well-wishers, he donated it to Yasukuni Shrine.

I didn’t see any mention of an increase in rank.
