And while they thought little of a low-born peon like Hitler, they saw in him an opportunity to reclaim “glory” for Germany and so jumped aboard. It was only when the realized just how ruinous the war was becoming that they began plotting against him, the idea being that as much as the Western powers hated the Reich, they hated Bolshevism more and would agree to at least a ceasefire while the Soviets were kicked back across the Polish border.

Not just that, but the July 20th plotters also had some fairly unrealistic demands, such as being able to hang on to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and confirmation of other seizures of territory throughout Eastern Europe.
