I think they just didn’t (and don’t) care. They have been very blatant in their “we’re the cops and that means we are the law” attitude throughout this. As far as I can tell watching these guys, the fact that the kid ended up dead meant that by definition, the kid was in the wrong (aka he “deserved it”).

Yeah, I think that’s abundantly clear. Somehow I picture the conversation as follows:

“Hey, yeah, I shot some black kid to death out here on the street.”
“Well, did he deserve it?”
“He was in my way, so yeah, he did.”
“Okay, well, no need to file a report. Just lay low for a few days, we might have you leave town so be packed and ready to go. We’ll bring you back on with full pay when it all blows over.”
