Don’t be too comfortable with the inclusiveness of southern Black pastors. We’ve had Dem meetings break down into homophobic rants by respected elders. The strong CR contributions of the churches comes with a price.
King wasn’t like the Black pastors you met with. One of his closest, most trusted advisors was Bayard Rustin. They were so close that Strom Thurmond attempted to slander King by suggesting the two were lovers, introducing an FBI surveillance photograph of Rustin talking to King while King was taking a bath. Bayard’s sexual orientation was never a secret, yet Rustin was one of the few people King trusted completely.
