Do you remember the “send” program? After I decided to not be a physics major, hoping against hope that switching to CS would save me (it didn’t, my brain fried and I dropped out), I learned C and then wrote the C version (a friend wrote the original version as a script). After I left, Jer cleaned it up. In the help, it listed “tex” as an example user. That was me.
