we managed even though the sushi chef did not speak english

near the end of dinner he made that ubiquitous sign with his hands way up….

i said “ah, ape hangers”

we spent 20 minutes trying to translate the idiom so it made some sense

Get a book of paper matches.
Pull one out.
Pull it apart, so that it forms a “V”
Hold each of the ends between thumb and first finger.
Raise it high over your head with your arms in front of you.
Stomp your right foot three times.
Repeat.
