So, what you’re saying is that the government, going through the correct channels by getting a judges order, has no right to ever search any private property in a criminal investigation? Because the phone, while an awesome technological wonder developed in my lifetime, is property.

They are free to search it as much as they wish — it’s in their possession, after all. They’re not free to compel Apple to develop a new technology and add it to the phone.

This is exactly right. The FBI not asking to search a single phone. They are asking for the ability to search any iPhone at any time they want.

Imagine it this way. How would you feel if the FBI was granted the power to search anybody’s home on a whim without a warrant? That’s what the FBI is asking here.

There’s a word for governments that grant law enforcement this power.
