Keep in mind that the previous generation of admirals who had a battleship rung on their promotion ladders fared very well with carriers. Before WW2 started, the professionals knew that battleships weren’t the ultimate naval weapon. The Navy even required commanders who would command carriers to be aviators. Bull Halsey had to get his wings or he would have commanded a destroyer squadron for his career.
