Isn’t this basically what both parties do when the incumbent is from their own party? I’m guessing the DNC wasn’t going to endorse anyone running against Obama in 2012. And the GOP wasn’t going to endorse anyone running against Bush in 2004…

I haven’t heard of it being done before. If it is normal, I stand corrected.
