Agh don’t get me started on the reluctant slave owner mythos. I worked at a history magazine after I left college and I had to help one of the writers research slavery at Monticello. Jefferson was a brutal slave owner. Jefferson’s writings are some of the best by an American man of words but Jefferson the human being was awful. And I don’t feel bad saying that.
