If you are a business person you would be aware of the tax. However I doubt the average working stiff getting a pay check really is aware of how much his gross pay was reduced. Back in the days before withholding one may have been more aware just how much he/she was paying. Of course one of the reasons for withholding was a person might be hard pressed to pay the tax all at one time.

But do you realize how horribly inefficent it would be for everyone to have to get paid in dollars and coins in this day and age?
