Allegedly, if you thoroughly mix part of flour with fat (about 1/3 to 1/2) and then make the piecrust, you can skip the vodka trick. Both of them are ways of reducing the amount of gluten in the final product.
But what do I know, I rarely make pies, and almost always buy premade crusts.
