There’s an argument to be made that because Syria likely violated the Geneva Protocols (likely because there is a legal issue of whether use in a civil war violates the letter of the treaty, while obviously violating the spirit of the treaty), and as such has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, intervention by other parties to those treaties could be allowed under international law.

That doesn’t necessarily mean getting involved in what is essentially a 4-sided civil war (Assad’s regime, Arab rebels, Kurdish rebels, and ISIS) is a good idea. But there is a legal and even moral justification for acting.
