I think the reason leftists like him sometimes defend brutal authoritarian regimes is because those regimes oppose ‘Western Imperialism’. That’s always good in their eyes, so they have to pretend that human rights abuses don’t happen under those regimes. It’s inconceivable to them that the United States might be better than a lot of places even with its spotty human rights record.
