Speaking of Arthur, I wonder if he is where the Republican party started to go wrong. When I come across his statements the more than a little bit harbor xenophobia.

Xenophobia was pretty rampant during that part of American history. Seems the people who got there first were worried about the millions of immigrants coming in the late 19th and early 20th century. Fear was one reason for the IQ tests given (in English) to immigrants to thin the herd, as it were. It’s a recurring pattern.
