In 1916, residents of the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands) approved the territory’s proposed sale to the United States by a vote of 4027 for to 7 against in an unofficial referendum. This, and the sale itself, were largely the result of a campaign led by local newspaper editor and labor activist David Hamilton Jackson. In the more formal referendum in Denmark itself, the vote was 283,670 in favor, 158,157.
