Shepherds are good guard dogs, as are dobs. Any dog bred to protect livestock will make a decent guard.

My friends have two shepherds who are noise-makers whenever someone rings the doorbell or otherwise stirs them up. And one of the other usually sleeps just inside the front door of their house (the other sleeps in the main bed room.)

And then one day when I was visiting I just came right in since I was expected and didn’t want to cause a stir. Opened the front door and walked in carrying a few packages. Dog just inside the front door looked up at me, wagged his tail, and then got up and followed me the rest of the way in.

I probably got away with that since the dogs knew me as friendly and had picked up my scent cleanly coming in. But I still put a little seed of doubt in his head.
