The point is that holding ourselves to higher standards has failed to give us any moral purchase because, for many, our existence as Dems already is a discounting moral failure. Trying to preempt any sort of moral posturing against us with resignation before its asked of us doesn’t give us any sort of tangible moral high ground. In many cases, it simply allows the GOP and the media to elicit an even higher standard of behavior for Dems while letting the GOP lower their standard even more because ‘both sides same thing’. We have to let the current standard run its course while demanding the GOP be drug back up to that bar, rather than raising our own bar without prompting.

The Democrats aren’t ever going to appeal to the lunatics who think that being Democrats is a moral failure. They do stand to lose ground with decent people if they lower themselves to Trump’s level.
