Totally staying out of this argument.
Just wanted to talk about my genealogy discovery last night, because it was a profoundly moving bummer.
I finally found where one of my ancestors is from, I think. I need to find pre-1856 Catholic church records for the town, because that’s when my ancestors left. It’s made more complicated by the fact that the town was Germany then and is Poland now. In fact, after WWII, all ethnic Germans were expelled. After WWI, the town voted 34,000 to 1,000 to be in Germany. The town population is now 5,000.
Whoa. 35,000 to 5,000? The place has to be a ghost town, unless an enormous number of homes were destroyed.
But still—they evicted that many?
Then I went to the library catalog page for the town. Do you see what I see?
Crappity crap crap.
I sat there thinking about what happens when we start sorting people into us and them and then making them get out. There are proposal right now to make certain thems get out of here or there.
I’m agin it. Too much suffering for my tastes.
Again, this has nothing to do with the current discussion, just with my discoveries of last night.
