McCaskill also seems to be wobbly on this issue. I’m not going to get too bent out of shape if the Democrats sustain a filibuster with a few deviations from the party line, but these people are kidding themselves if they think being Republican-lite is a winning strategy.

Democratic seats up in 2018 in states won by Trump:

Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri

The only potential pick ups for Democrats are Nevada and a long shot in Arizona. Oh, and Florida and Virginia are also up this year.

If Democrats want to hold the Senate, a few defectors on things like this are probably going to happen, because otherwise, I don’t know if Democrats can get to 51+ seats in the Senate. For some on the left, it will appear as Republican-liteism. But to the voters that these Senators will actually need to win reelection, it’s an example of them being a representative of their voters.
