Like I’ve said before, when he was on the TV talk shows 30 years, he was actually quite an entertaining presence - brash, glib, and as you said, with a panache for entertaining the audience. He was a two-bit shyster, to be sure, but he was quite an entertaining one.

We were aware of his extensive business dealings abroad and how closely those business partners were connected to foreign governments.

Yet he sold voters on the notion that he was a successful independent businessman and not beholden to donors and vested corporate & political interests.

In that sense, he successfully pulled of a total scam.
