Reggie Stokes, a white guy who is married to a black woman and lives in Alabama, said the following: “Some white people say, ‘I grew up poor; my family had nothing. I had to work really hard for everything I have, so I don’t know what black people are upset about.’ Well, my dad was a school teacher. We had old cars and rented old house, but I had it lot better than the African-American kids on the other side of town. Why? Because I was white. White privilege is still real, and white people need to understand that crap. I’ve also heard, ‘Everything was fine until [Barack] Obama got in; he caused the racial divisions. ’ I say, ‘Yes, he caused them—because he happened to be black and you couldn’t deal with that.’ Obama didn’t incite anything, but white people were not comfortable with a black person in the White House, so, essentially, they blame him for being black. Most white people, not intentionally, are racist. They’re not educated to understand the struggle African Americans have been through to be where they are today. I didn’t really understand the struggle until I got married. I don’t care how successful an African American may be; the struggle—the ‘invisible shackles’—are real. My brother-in-law is an attorney and he still gets looks in his own neighborhood….”“
