There’s a famous quote from MLK about the 1964 Republican Convention:

“The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right.”

In the unlikely even that he’d been a Republican before that, he surely was not afterwards.

A lot of conservatives mention the Dixiecrats were Democrats. They don’t mention the few Southern Republicans in the 50’s and 60’s tried outflanking the Democrats on Civil Rights. It’s part of why Republicans started winning in the South.
