The “soul” is such an antiquated concept. You’re trying to retcon the idea (away from the semi-eternal magical body of the hellfire-and-brimstone preachers) into some rather vague and ethereal and feel-good intangible.
It is an entirely subjective term that cannot be quantified in any concrete terms, it can mean whatever the writer/reader want it to mean.
Which makes it a great topic for conjecture, for poetry, fiction or song lyrics, but nothing beyond that.
It can be a useful shorthand for the degree of complexity with which those atoms are combined into Golden Retrievers and suicide bombers.
