My mom would get distracted—she was trying to make lunches and breakfast at the same time often—and burn our toast. It wasn’t uncommon for me to come home from my morning paper route to find the charred scrapings from toast in the snow outside the kitchen door. I don’t like burnt toast, but there’s something nostalgic in the smell.
we had an old toaster that always burned the toast, so my mom used to tell my sisters that eating burnt toast helps make your hair curly, as they were jealous of their younger brother’s curly hair.
that has become a running gag in our family
