Eh, they were happy to require every free white male to own a rifle compatible with those of the Army. (Militia Acts of 1792). Had the US Army been equipped with selective fire rifles firing an intermediate cartridge (aka “assault weapons”) at that time, I have no doubt that it would have been equally required of all militia members - at that time, all free white males.
