I can only go by my own experience as a farmer.
I was ~50 years old when the tobacco industry died. I and a few others in my area saw it coming and started diversifying before the rug got pulled out on us.
There are still a handful of tobacco farmers here (and they whine every year about how the tobacco companies are paying half as much or less than they used to), but those of us who made to transition to other farming operations are doing much better.

I’m glad you were able to do that.
I’m not sure what else you could do with range land in the high desert other than run cattle.
