if you forget about the bolded nonsense, the search for his patriotic sense of duty, you’ll never be satisfued.

focus on what he says happened that he can prove because we are in this situation

musing about what his motives are or were distracts from verifying that what he’s saying is true

Then he probably shouldn’t be talking now since he’s part of the investigation so his motives come into play again for me.

I don’t find it distracting to discuss both. I don’t know why he would be absolved from a discussion about who he is and why he did what he did. Nobody else is.
