What you are hearing is actually what I call a “poli-Texan” accent, an exaggerated drawl used by politicians in the mistaken belief that real people talk that way in this part of the world. It is an almost institutionalized variant of plain folks propaganda here. The obnoxious Phil Gramm (a professor of economics in real life) was a prime example.

Another one was a local DA candidate whose commercials featured him riding across the prarie on an apaloosa stallion and speaking in prime good ol’ boy poli-tex. In fact, the man was a British immigrant, he had an expensive public school education, and in private he spoke with a classic Oxonian accent. He lost the election.
