It’s definitely easy to get disheartened by all the subtle and not so subtle racism and otherism (good word), but perhaps be heartened that there are still people out here who are empathetic and see this as a nation of immigrants and “others” who don’t hew to the “seal the borders” conservative bullshit narrative. A lot of them congregate here, online.

I want to take heart in that, but I’ve seen too many people I know, in the meatworld and online, who I respected and thought had their heads on, quickly double back into the right-wing morass after one event and never come back. Ferguson alone seemed to increase that number exponentially as the ‘truth’ of Wilson’s testimony convinced so many people of the true threat of ‘thuggery’ and lead them to condemn damn near everyone who took Brown’s side. Between that and the folks who just go ‘both sides same thing’ and treat them as all equally bad, I just don’t have that hope anymore. It’s increasingly become a fool’s errand to hope.
