Indifference is how it all works. I don’t think the average German of 1933-1945 possessed the hatred for the Jewish people that Hitler did but you know what it didn’t need that. All you needed was enough people to think “Hey, I’m not a Jew so why should I care about how these people are treated” or “I have my own problems.” And you know what, I get why people may slip into that feeling at times because I sometimes struggle but I keep on getting back to the fundamental point of where I see my own privileges and status and I imagine an 11 year old child with the same conditions I have whether it’s my heart condition, Asperger’s, anxiety, or whatever, and I want that chlid to have an as good life as possible. I was lucky and it had nothing to do with anything I did.

From what I’m read, anti-Semitic attitudes were fairly widespread in Germany at that time, but certainly not murderous, exterminationist anti-Semitism.

Hitler and the Nazis was the supercharger that turned those anti-Semitic attitudes lurking in the background, those toxic ideas hidden just beneath the surface, into the Holocaust.
