The original reason the the requirement was adopted for the Constitution was to prevent a foreign Manchurian Candidate (though they didn’t call it that) from rising to claim the Presidency in an election.
I’m not really comfortable with having Rodrigo Duterte as President, but there are an awful lot of people who are.
Most nations do not allow their chief executive/prime minister become leader of the nation for precisely the same reason.
Again this is the problem I have with how people like yourself are presenting the debate. Someone like Rodrigo Duterte wouldn’t be able to run. I’m specifically referring to people like Ted Lieu who come to this country as children, get naturalized, serve in our armed forces, and presently in our Congress and would have been a citizen/resident for the US for a number of years. And honestly, if the worry was about a Manchurian Candidate, anyone with foreign born parents would be suspect and that simply is not right.
