I don’t know what led me to it, but I was reading some stuff the other day about evangelical world views and how there is something of a split between those who adhere to the teachings of Jesus and those who adhere to the teachings of Paul. And how they try to bring two very different views into alignment. Most white evangelical churches follow the teachings of Paul. I’d need to find the links again, but it was actually rather enlightening.

My priest and I did a bible study yesterday. The Letter of James, Chapter 2. The antithesis to Paul. You can’t have works without faith but faith without works is dead dead dead. That tension is essential to Christianity but in America the Protestant fallacy of faith and scripture alone has pretty much won with a huge helping of the Calvinist heresy of the Prosperity Gospel.

At best, American Christianity is crawling into a chrysalis to pupate. It remains to be seen if it will survive to break out or not. If not, it will be because we don’t deserve to.
