Dunno how much you know about me, but I was in that mold until my mental programming got broken back in college. I mean, you’re right, but it’s depressing to me because it’s literally a case of, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

By the grace, you also have the little fishes and a wife to give you a solid stake in the future as well as the present. Loving kids in the generation(s) below you — whether yours or someone close to you, like HW’s adored niece — gives a perspective I don’t think DF had. I don’t remember if he talked about siblings or cousins or friends with kids, a younger generation that he’s close to for support when inevitably he loses the elder. It doesn’t excuse his choices, but it’s a sad place to be.
