Well, I once raised a topic about “non-phonetic” spelling here.

I mean, whenever a Latin script is used in another language, even if heavily modified, like Vietnamese, you guys just use the names as they are. Which leaves the question of how to pronounce each given name properly completely open.

We tend to phonetically pronounce foreign words. We have a nearby town called Marquis, which we pronounce ‘markwis’, we have people who get all snarky when foreign names are pronounced as they are in the natural language. But if you mispronounce their name, ooh boy.
