I would also like to add in reference to the children that were killed. For black people during that time, there really wasn’t a such thing as a harmless or non-threatening white person. All white people had a power black people didn’t. If I white person wanted to harm you, they could without consequence. If a white person accused you of something, you couldn’t defend yourself against the accusation. If they wanted something from you they could take it and you had no recourse. A this was pretty much true until Jim Crow ended.

During the 50s my father’s family lived next door to a junk yard and sometimes my father would play with the white yard owner’s son. One day my father was playing with a toy airplane and the little white boy took it and wouldn’t give it back. If he had been black my father would have fought the boy for his plane if he had too, but he knew hitting a white kid could mean trouble for him and his parents. The little white boy knew it too. So he just let him have it and went home. He got in trouble for “losing” his plane but he never told what really happened because there was nothing he or his parents could do about it. My father’s father wouldn’t have confronted the junk yard owner about it.

All white people, even children were more powerful and therefore dangerous to black people. Yes, again killing children is wrong, but don’t presume that black slaves perceived white children as non-threatening. They had the real potential of being problematic as well.

Quoted in full because it deserves quoting in full.

It’s always painful when reality slaps its dick in your face like that.
