The Religious Right are the foot soldiers of the GOP. The billionaires supply the money, but the GOP still needs volunteers and, critically voters, since money still can’t vote. The GOP has to run on culture wars, because very few people are going to vote for more tax cuts for billionaires, and the GOP has no positive agenda to help anyone who isn’t in the top 1%.

The Religious Right also has its own agenda, which they put in place as soon as Ronald Reagan ditched them as soon as Nancy’s White House astrologer told her that the stars were right to do so: they have been insinuating their people into all levels of public life: government, public administration, education, the military, etc.

Mike Pence represents their ultimate triumph, a proper Fundamentalist theocrat a heartbeat away from the Presidency.
