Might have seen a bird or seal eating one and decided to give it a try. And probably started with crabs and moved onto lobster since they appeared to be similar enough they might be edible as well.

As somebody pointed out, the trial-and-error that went into our diet is impressive, especially with mushrooms: “This first one tastes like a bit like beef, this second one killed Bob outright and the third one makes you see God for a week!”
