Trump doesn’t know or care about history, but he may understand that Putin wants to reassemble the Soviet Union and, since Ukraine was part of that nation, Trump is fine with Putin recapturing it and reincorporating it into the Russian Federation.

It’s not just the USSR but the whole Russian empire. I really don’t think he understands the finer details.
