Everybody was waiting for him to self-destruct and most of them openly hesitated to openly criticize him because they hoped to be in a position to pick his followers.

Actually, they DID criticize him. Cruz loudly called him a pathological liar, for example. The National Review dedicated a whole issue to denouncing him.

What they didn’t do was to coalesce around an alternative who could beat him.
