The drug eats up the pain, as you heal and experience less pain, while still taking the same dose, the high get’s greater. Then tolerance starts to happen and you need more of the drug to maintain the high. Not having it produces withdrawal pain, and so on …

Speaking only for myself, it is that sort fear that made me decide that I’ll never use a narcotic painkiller at all, as far as I can help it. Better to be in great pain and your own person than a junkie.
