Fear is pretty much the essence of their being. They’re afraid of everything. Different people (even white people who don’t believe in the same boogeyman they do, or any invisible man in the sky at all), but especially non-whites, any type of change whatsoever. They always seem to lust for the times of old (50s is a big one) because the discrimination was open and legal, and the women knew their place in society (both of those things are manifestations of fear). Fear that somebody they see as inferior could be better than they are. Much easier to put somebody down for an abstract reason than trying to actually be a better person.

A lot of that fear manifests itself into aggression, violence, and hatred (which is then diagnosed as racism/bigotry/misogyny).

I’ve gone off on a tangent here, but gun-nuts are afraid of everything, but most of all, they’re afraid of their own weakness.
