The combination of Hillary Clinton* and a historically small field of candidates are probably the only reasons Sanders had any support.

*Say what you will but she lost the nomination in 2008 in mostly the same circumstances, mostly unknown/unproven candidates (and the swarmy John Edwards).

He and his supporters will never admit it but he got a lot of support from conservative Dems who hate HRC. I think 2020 will be when his mystique wears off. Other candidates will point out things that HRC didn’t or got ignored because Bernie was the scrappy underdog story. He’s not that anymore.
