Mind controlling parasites? Sounds awfully like midichlorians to me.

There is a snail parasite that infects its antenna. They get fat and turn rainbow colors. The parasite also makes the snail hang out where they can be seen by, and pecked at, by birds - which I believe is the next host in its life cycle. Antenna pop, parasite gets on birds and away it goes. Cool stuff.
