Federal censuses in the United States only started listing names of household members in 1850. Births, deaths, and marriages are sporadically recorded around and before that time period, depending on the state.

Yeah I noticed that. Makes it hard to find people. Another problem is misspelling of names. I’m lucky in one sense though. Pennsylvania has extensive death records from the first half of the century 20th or so. Located a third great grandmother’s there. Man what a life that woman lived. From rural, Gaelic speaking Ireland to living in the age of early flight.
