Right and i don’t delude myself about the white working class either. I know that men like my grandfather worked their asses off for their families but I don’t delude myself about the real reasons those groups have become solidly Republican and it’s really frustrating seeing a Senator from fucking Vermont lecture Democrats about it as if he has any clue what the white working class really thinks. Places like WV, rust belt PA, and others have gone Republican because they don’t like social liberalism and they’re willing to grudgingly accept right wing bs on the economy over social liberalism. Do I wish more working class people voted for Dems? Sure, I wish they could see that the GOP doesn’t give two shits about them or their interests but I wish more they could see that us being a proudly pro-choice, LGBT, immigrant party doesn’t hurt their bottom line at all.

The GOP lies to them because that’s what they want, happy lies about how they’re the “real America” and everything that they’ve ever known and cared about is “under attack.” They want to hear that the clothing factory that kept the town afloat closed because the “liberal elite” passed laws to please the “treehuggers” that made business too expensive and then the “globalists” sold off the jobs to China. If you point out how those jobs in “the good ol’ days” involved dangerous machines or toxic chemicals, they assure you that it was perfectly safe “so long as you were careful.” And hey, they grew up with air smelling of those chemicals and water that tasted funny, but “I grew up healthy, didn’t I?” You know, before they start sounding like they’re hacking up a lung or wondering why so many people in town ended up with cancer.
