I just have had awful experiences with Dell. You are likely right about the hard-drive. I just remember taking my last Dell, which was incredibly forward-enabled when it was built, and having the guy look inside and say, “Yeah, sorry, can’t upgrade the power supply cause it won’t fit. Can’t upgrade the motherboard because it’s not upgradeable. Can’t do pretty much anything.” And that was the desktop tower. As I recall, the laptop had the graphics integrated into the motherboard, so if the graphics went on the fritz, you were just basically screwed.

That latter is true of almost all laptops. It’s also true if desktops, though you have a slot you can stick a graphics card into if the integrated graphics goes out.
