That’s probably the best analogy, at least in recent times. We have the equivalents of loyalty oaths, grandstanding Congress-fools, attacks on the arts, wild allegations against government employees, and a threat that is real enough in many ways, but nothing like what is alleged in either its nature or magnitude.

We’ve actually seen an effort, led by loonies like Coulter, to rehabilitate McCarthyism in recent years.
